WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Wisconsin Rapids Youth Wrestling (WRYW) program delivered an outstanding performance at the Youth State tournament March 27-29. Sending 26 qualifiers and turning in multiple podium finishes across three days of competition, highlighted by a state championship and a historic milestone for the program’s girls division.
Day one set the tone for WRYW, as the team went a perfect 5-0 in placement matches to close out the opening round strong. Leading the way was Jacob Johnson, who captured a state title. Other podium finishes included Hudson Fuller and Wyatt Fuller, who each earned third place honors, while Braxton Bagnowski and Declan Tritz each secured fifth-place finishes.
Momentum carried into day two, where WRYW added four more podium finishes to bring the team total to nine. Reed Akkerman led the group with a runner-up finish, while Jameson Fuller placed third. Bennett Ashbeck and Bentley Goodenough each battled to sixth place, helping position the team for a strong final day of boys competition.
WRYW had four girls competing, with two advancing all the way to the championship finals. Brix Kolo and Chloe Ysquierdo each delivered remarkable performances to earn second place finishes. While they each fell just short of a state title, their accomplishments marked a significant milestone. Kolo and Ysquierdo are the first female finalists in WRYW history.
“This is an incredible moment for our program,” one coach said. “To see these athletes compete at such a high level and make history is something special.”
With a youth state champion, multiple podium finishers and a groundbreaking achievement in the girls division, WRYW showcased both its depth and its future promise at this year’s youth state tournament. As the team wrapped up competition in Madison, the message was clear: Rapids wrestling continues to rise.
