Who is SADIE?

Posted

In 2005, fabric artist and Arts Council Board Member Jeanne Weymouth designed and made SADIE, a mascot that traveled around the community promoting upcoming events at local businesses. SADIE’s name was an acronym for ”Singing, Acting, Dancing, Invigoration, Exciting” — all the things that the Arts Council stands for. SADIE, sadly, is no more, but what she stood for is still every bit as important. Part of our mission statement is “…to promote enjoyment and appreciation of a variety of performing art forms among area residents of all ages…”
Singing: The majority of shows we present involve singing. We have offered country, 50/60s, swing, symphony, jazz…our performers have come from as far away as Australia and several from Las Vegas and Nashville. Original members of the band Chicago were on stage just last week.
Acting: Every one of our performers are actors in their own right. We don’t offer plays anymore (those are presented by the Wisconsin Rapids Community Theatre), but in the early days of the Arts Council, there was a one-woman show on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, several Shakespearean plays, and even Church Basement Ladies a few years ago as part of the annual presentations.
Dancing: The most recent presentations were “MJ the Illusion” and “Uptown.” Both groups offered singing and dancing and were part of our Outreach Program working with local dance studios. Young dance students learned from professionals and were able to perform with them during the show for “MJ the Illusion.”
Invigorating and Exciting: These go hand in hand. Whether it be the exhilaration of Whitney Houston music, a headliner from Vegas,or the magic presented by Illusionist Bill Blagg, there has never been a show presented by the Arts Council that hasn’t had people on their feet (and sometimes dancing in the aisles!).
The theater transports you to another world…a world of color, sound, excitement. It’s a world of memories and dreams. We hope you have enjoyed the opportunities presented to the Wisconsin Rapids area over the past 50 seasons and will continue to support the Arts Council so it will be here to celebrate 100! The 2026-27 season has already started, but it’s not too late to take advantage of season subscriber pricing. Book at least four shows and receive discounts and perks.
