WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The preseason is officially coming to an end, and for the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings Junior Hockey, the final test came with an opportunity to see just how far the team has come since the beginning of training camp.
After weeks of practices, team-building, travel and preseason competition, the Riverkings traveled to Oshkosh for their final preseason game against the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh ACHA hockey team.
With the start of the Riverkings’ first NCDC season just around the corner, the game provided a final opportunity to be tested both physically and mentally before the games begin to count.
The intensity of the matchup challenged the Riverkings in different areas of their game. It was a chance to put their systems, communication, pace and compete level to work against another experienced college hockey team.
The Riverkings came away from the game with plenty of positives and, just as importantly, plenty to work on.
The final preseason test highlighted some of the team’s strengths while also showing the areas that will require additional attention during the upcoming week. With the first regular-season game approaching quickly, those lessons will be an important part of the team’s preparation.
But the trip to Oshkosh wasn’t only about hockey.
More than hockeyAs part of the trip, the Riverkings also had the opportunity to experience University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh from a different perspective.
An outstanding UW–Oshkosh student took the time to lead the team around campus, introducing the players to the school grounds and explaining different aspects of university life. The players learned more about the academic system, student experience, available subjects and what life can look like for athletes and students pursuing their education.
The players had plenty of questions along the way, creating an opportunity for an open conversation about studying, choosing subjects, student life and what to expect from the college experience.
For a group of junior hockey players thinking about what comes next in their hockey careers, experiences like this are valuable reminders that their development extends beyond the rink.
The season starts nowWith the final preseason game now behind them, there is no more waiting.
The preseason provided tests. It provided lessons. It showed the team what they do well and where there is still work to be done.
The first NCDC season in Riverkings history has begun, and the team is ready to find out what the season will bring.
The Riverkings played their first regular-season game of the 2026–27 season on Sept. 26, when they traveled to face the Hudson Havoc.
Now, the preparation continues with a new level of purpose. The team’s next game is set for Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Summit Sports & Ice Complex, with puck drop set for 8 p.m.
Fans who can’t make it to the rink can follow the Riverkings’ season games through Black Bear TV.
