NEW HOPE – A 35-year-old man has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the deaths of his parents during a domestic incident that led to an officer-involved shooting in central Wisconsin, authorities said.
John L. Shulfer was shot by a Portage County sheriff’s deputy the evening of July 6 after emerging from his family’s home armed and failing to comply with verbal commands, according to a news release from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the New Hope residence just before 9 p.m. for a welfare check and found Dale S. Shulfer, 53, dead in the front yard from an apparent gunshot wound. After surrounding the home, they encountered John Shulfer, who came out of the back of the house armed.
The deputy, a 13-year veteran of the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, shot the suspect, who was treated at the scene and airlifted to a local hospital. The deputy has been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation.
Deputies later found Paula L. Shulfer, 52, dead inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound. All three family members lived at the residence where the incident occurred.

Two children present at the home were found unharmed and released to a family member, authorities said.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigation. The case will be reviewed by the Portage County District Attorney’s Office upon completion of the investigation.
No other injuries were reported during the incident.
