WOOD COUNTY – Home and Community Education allows its members to gather with friends and family and connect over food, much like many do over the holidays.
In November, the club held a no-bake treats lesson that was very well attended. Participants learned to make Rice Krispies bars, white chocolate cranberry pecan snacks and chocolate peanut butter haystacks. Everybody got a copy of the recipe and at the end of the lesson, everyone tasted the treats.
Then, in December, HCE met as a county organization to celebrate Christmas. The Rudolph Pines club hosted the event, and the Assumption High School band and choir entertained the members over lunch. Baskets were raffled off, which were donated by members of the club. The money raised generally goes toward HCE’s annual scholarship, given to a deserving senior from the area. The organization also supports the Wisconsin Bookworms Program, which encourages young readers, and Backpacks for Kids.
Sometimes in the winter, it’s nice to have something to look forward to each month. There are two active HCE clubs in Wood County: The Rudolph Pines and Club 51. Both clubs are always looking for new members.
Club 51 typically holds an annual brat fry at the Piggly Wiggly in Nekoosa. Sometimes members give lessons, and a few times a year the club makes table favors to be given to seniors that meet weekly at the senior meal site at the Nekoosa Community Center. Rudolph Pines holds their annual brat fry at Quality Foods in Wisconsin Rapids.
New members are especially welcome for their new ideas. Those in the Wisconsin Rapids, Rudolph, Nekoosa or Port Edwards area who may have an interest in joining the HCE, please feel free to contact HCE Membership Chairperson Denise Mancl at deedeemancl@gmail.com.
