WOOD COUNTY – A total of 19,897 ballots were cast in Wood County’s April 7 election, with several influential roles shifting hands.
Wisconsin Rapids
Incumbent Matt Zacher defeated challenger Tom Terry Mews in the race for Wisconsin Rapids Mayor 2,943-940, retaining his position for what will be the first three-year mayoral term for the city following a March decision by the city’s common council. Meanwhile, incumbent Susan C. Schill beat Adam Vanderwerff 2,354-1,366 in the election for Wisconsin Rapids City Attorney.
In a shockingly tight race, Jeff Penzkover (237) was elected Wisconsin Rapids Alderperson for District 4 by a mere one vote over competitor Tom Rayome (236). Dennis Polach defeated Shawn Ryan 249-196 for the District 6 seat. The Wisconsin Rapids Common Council is made up of eight alderpersons, each serving a two-year term.
The Wisconsin Rapids School District requested to exceed its revenue limit by $3,800,000 per year for five years, beginning with the 2026-27 school year and ending with the 2030-31 school year, for non-recurring purposes consisting of technology, curriculum and security updates, and to maintain academic and educational programs. The request passed narrowly by a vote of 4,717-4,485.
Wood County
Emily Nolan-Plutchak defeated Elizabeth Gebert 9,588-8,929 to secure the Circuit Court Judge Branch 3 seat. Donna M. Rozar beat Nat Brememer for the County Supervisor District 2 seat 511-362, while Paul Goldberg defeated Scott Brehm for the District 9 seat by a close vote of 538-501.
Marshfield
Marshfield elected Nick Poeschel as mayor over incumbent Lois TeStrake. Poeschel served as city council president for one year while the city had no mayor, and spent six years as a member of the council.
Natasha Tompkins won the race for Marshfield District 3 Alderperson, defeating Joe Konieczny 474-182.
Nekoosa
Nekoosa School District requested to exceed its revenue limit for non-recurring purposes consisting of operational expenses, including but not limited to improving and maintaining district programs, and was granted that request by a vote of 1,0005-603.
