WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Join in the fun and bring the whole family to Science by the River for a day of discovery on Saturday, Oct. 18 in downtown Wisconsin Rapids. Science by the River celebrates curiosity and inspires young people and families to engage with science and technology in their community. This free, family-friendly event features a series of educational, hands-on learning stations along the Wisconsin River and is hosted in conjunction with the Wisconsin Science Festival.
Visitors can start their trek at either Ben Hansen Park or Lyon Park in Wisconsin Rapids. Educational booths and hands-on demonstration stations can be found along the Wisconsin River from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Approximate trail distance is one mile one way. Travel by car and park near each station, ride a bike (free rentals available through Wood County River Riders Bike Share Program) or walk along the scenic river route.
Demonstration Stations will include opportunities to learn about Wisconsin animals, dissect an owl pellet, design and build your own sailboat for a rain gutter regatta, experience a ham radio demonstration, learn how to identify and cast a line for Wisconsin fishes, participate in a 3-D printing make-and-take project, learn about Wisconsin water resources by testing out a landscape model and so much more. Visit demonstration stations to earn a free prize.
Attendees who have a private well are also encouraged to bring a cup of water from their sink in any clean container to have it screened for nitrates onsite by Science by the River. Volunteers will be on hand to go over results and answer any drinking water questions participants might have.
Science by the River is supported with funding from the Incourage Community Foundation and facilitated by Extension Wood County in partnership with the Wisconsin Science Festival.
