Police: Woman used bad check to buy car, strip parts

Editor's note: This story has been updated to show police have cleared Cory Aron Berendes, 26,  from the investigation.

MARSHFIELD – A woman used a worthless $60,000 check to purchase a vehicle from a Marshfield dealership before stripping and selling parts from it, police said.

The incident occurred June 28 at Wheelers of Marshfield, 2701 S. Maple Ave., according to a Wisconsin Crime Alert issued by the Marshfield Police Department.

Police identified the suspect as Jaime Sue Woelbing, 48, who is white. She was with another person, Cory Aron Berendes, 26,  but police say they have spoken with him and cleared him from the investigation.

The pair left the dealership with the vehicle after the transaction. Several days later, the check was discovered to be insufficient funds, according to the alert.

Berendes returned the vehicle to the dealership, but parts had been removed and sold, police said.

Detective Matt Berres said authorities believe Woelbing may be involved in similar schemes throughout Wisconsin, where vehicles are purchased with worthless checks, then stripped for parts.

Police said Woelbing uses several aliases with the last names Boring, Rightmire, Woelbing or combinations of those names.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspects is asked to contact Berres at 715-384-0816 or matthew.berres@ci.marshfield.wi.us.
