MARSHFIELD – A new feature film highlighting the life and legacy of early Marshfield theater owner John P. “J.P.” Adler is in development, with plans to begin filming in the spring of 2026.
The movie, based on the book Showstopper by local author Kris Leonhardt, will be directed and written by Green Bay-based Film Producer Freddy Moyano.
The project will explore Adler’s journey from childhood to his years running the Adler Theater Company — a business empire in those days.
“While fate positioned J.P. Adler to become a successful showman, it was vision and persistence that helped him thrive,” Leonhardt’s book stated.
“While building one of Wisconsin’s largest independent theater chains, J.P. struggled with the heavy hand of the production companies, along with a multitude of obstacles.”
According to Moyano, the film will blend coming-of-age and historical fiction elements, focusing not only on Adler himself but also on his wife, Rosa, and daughters, Elizabeth “Bette” and Anne.
Moyano said he may present parts of the story through Bette’s perspective to highlight the family’s enduring influence.
“We want the film to capture the values of family, love and legacy,” Moyano said. “This story is about a man who helped shape Marshfield’s cultural identity.”
Filming is expected to begin in April 2026, with most scenes shot in Marshfield and additional production taking place in Green Bay.
Auditions will be held Feb. 28, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Chestnut Center for the Arts, 208 S. Chestnut Ave., Marshfield.
The production team is seeking about 100 extras and community members who can provide 1950s-60s-era vehicles for period scenes.
A high school band and local musicians, including a cellist, are also being recruited to assist with music.
“We encourage kids and adults alike to get involved,” Moyano said. “For students, we’re happy to provide letters of recommendation for college applications.”
Everyone involved will be mentioned in the credits.
The project is still in the process of securing full funding, and donations or sponsorships are being accepted to help bring the film to life.
Supporters can get involved or make contributions through the official project site www.adlerproject.org.
A Facebook page was recently instituted to provide ongoing updates at facebook.com/adlerfilmproject.
Current project partners include the Chestnut Center for the Arts, the North Wood County Historical Society and the Marshfield Area Community Foundation.
