More Than a Score

Posted

I am writing this from a seat at PNC Park, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates take the field. Earlier this month I sat in a different set of stands, watching the Milwaukee Brewers do the same thing under a different sky. Both times the scene looked the same. Black and gold in one place, blue and gold in the other. Strangers turned into neighbors for three hours, all wearing the colors of the team they loved. Some of them had money on the game too, a little extra reason to lean forward on every pitch.

It got me thinking. Is this really what brings us together? A shirt, a scoreboard, a bet?

Tomorrow many of these same people will sit in church pews, and Monday they will be back at their desks or on a job site, starting the week over again. Root for a team on Saturday, pray on Sunday, punch the clock on Monday. Is that the whole rhythm of a life, or is there something underneath it that we are too busy cheering to notice?

I do not think the ballgame and the pew are as far apart as they seem. Both are places where people show up together, hoping for something bigger than themselves to happen. A win, a moment of grace, a reason to believe the next inning or the next week might turn out better than the last. The crowd around me tonight is not really here for the final score. They are here because they do not want to be alone with the wondering, and a ballpark full of people wearing the same colors is as good a place as any to not be alone.

The answer is not that this is all there is, but that this is one of the ways we practice for everything else. We show up. We hope. We cheer for something outside ourselves. If we are paying attention, that habit might carry us further than the ninth inning.
