Mayor Zacher proclaims October as Pedestrian Safety Month and Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day

Posted

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Mayor Matt Zacher has issued proclamations designating October 2025 as Pedestrian Safety Month and Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day in Wisconsin Rapids. These observances align with statewide efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and raise awareness about the rights of individuals with vision impairments.
Pedestrian Safety Month emphasizes the importance of safe and accessible streets, sidewalks and crosswalks for all residents, including children, older adults and individuals with disabilities. The observance encourages communities to implement measures that improve pedestrian infrastructure and promote safe walking practices.
White Cane Safety Day, celebrated annually on Oct. 15, serves to educate the public about the significance of the white cane as a symbol of independence for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Wisconsin’s White Cane Law requires motorists to stop before approaching closer than 10 feet to a pedestrian using a white cane or service animal, ensuring their safety on the roads.
Mayor Zacher’s proclamations highlight Wisconsin Rapids’ commitment to fostering an inclusive and safe environment for all pedestrians. Residents are encouraged to participate in local events and initiatives throughout October to support these important causes.
