Guardian Angels Among Us

Posted

Dear Reader,

Airports tell a story about our society. Amid the rush of travelers focused on destinations, countless individuals struggle silently—an elderly person uncertain of gate changes, a parent juggling children and luggage, or someone with mobility challenges navigating construction zones.

Recently in Minneapolis, amid airport renovations and miserable weather, an elderly gentleman struggled toward his Salt Lake City connection. His difficulty walking made the journey nearly impossible. A simple gesture— helping him board one of those blue courtesy vans—made the difference between making his flight and being stranded.

“We don’t see that much lately,” remarked a Delta employee afterward. Her unexpected question followed: “Are you a Guardian Angel? Do you just appear when people are in need and then disappear?”

Her words highlighted something profound about our world today. Earlier, another traveler—an elderly woman confused about terminal connections—had also needed assistance. Initially, directions seemed sufficient until it became clear that personal guidance was necessary. “Oh, the heck with it, let me take you there.” is sometimes exactly the right response when someone needs help.

When asked about motivation for helping, the answer is beautifully simple: “Just paying blessings forward.”

These moments reveal a powerful truth. Guardian angels aren’t mystical beings—they’re ordinary people who pause long enough to notice others. They exist in airports, grocery stores, neighborhoods, and workplaces. They appear whenever someone lifts their gaze from screens and schedules to see fellow humans in need.

Our world hungers for more Guardian Angels. Not dramatic rescues, but small kindnesses that acknowledge another’s humanity. Every day presents countless opportunities to notice someone struggling—with packages, directions, language barriers, or simply loneliness.

The invitation stands for all of us: Look up. Notice. Act.

In a world increasingly isolated despite our connectivity, these moments of genuine human encounter restore something essential. They remind us we’re not merely individuals pursuing separate paths but a community traveling together.
