DNR considers permits for projects that may harm endangered lizards

Posted

ADAMS COUNTY – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is considering permits for two Adams County projects that could result in the unintentional killing of state-endangered slender glass lizards.
The DNR said it will accept public comments through Aug. 13 on incidental take permits for proposed golf course and power line projects, both of which have confirmed populations of the rare reptile in their vicinity.
Wisconsin Dunes LLC wants to build the Sand Valley Outpost Golf Course south of the existing Sand Valley Golf Course. The development would disturb about 132 acres, though the company plans to restore sand barrens, sand prairie and savanna habitat in areas where golf won’t be played.
Separately, American Transmission Co. is seeking authorization for its Northern Adams County Network Improvement Project, a combination of transmission line upgrades and new construction.
Incidental take permits allow projects to proceed even if they may unintentionally harm endangered species, provided the overall population isn’t put at risk and conservation measures are included.

DNR staff determined both projects could result in some lizard deaths but concluded neither would significantly reduce the species’ chances of survival or recovery in Wisconsin.
The slender glass lizard requires sandy habitats and is found in only a few Wisconsin counties.
Conservation biologist Rori Paloski is handling both permit applications. Assessment documents and background information on the lizard are available on the DNR’s Incidental Take Public Notices webpage.
Written comments on either project can be submitted to Paloski at the DNR’s Madison office at 101 S. Webster St., Madison, WI 53707, email at Rori.Paloski@wisconsin.gov or by calling 608-516-3742.
The comment period closes Aug. 13.
